Using Classworks Data to Develop IEP Goals

Effective IEP goals begin with an understanding of where your student is and what they are ready to work on. They also require clear progress measurement and Specially Designed Instruction (SDI) to help students meet their goals. Classworks provides the data needed to create measurable, individualized academic goals and makes it simple to incorporate that data into the tool of your choice.

Academic Screener data:

  • Identify Present Levels of Performance (PLOP, PLAAFP, or PLP)
  • Correlate with state standards and domain-based goals and objectives to inform Evidence-based Progress Monitoring and Individualized Learning Paths (ILPs)
  • Inform teacher-determined, goal-specific Mastery Measures

Step-by-Step Guidance

Review the student’s latest screener results

  1. Navigate to the Progress Monitoring screen
  2. Locate the student, and click on their name

  1. Click "Screening" along the left side of the student detail screen
  2. The student's most recent Academic Screener by Classworks data is shown
    1. Overall and domain-specific scaled scores and grade level equivalence
    2. Scaled scores use a vertical scale to show grade-level equivalence across the school year, helping educators see whether a student is performing early, mid, or late within a grade level.

In this performance, Gregor Mendel earned a 380 in Mathematical Processes, which places his performance in the first half of 4th grade.

  1. Gregor's support team identified Mathematical Processes as the domain with the objectives and state standards he is most in need of support with.
  2. Scroll down to see the Present Level of Performance statement and Ready to Learn statements in each domain.

  1. Scroll back to the top and click "View Standards."

  1. The state standards assessed on the Universal Screener will be displayed. Use this information to determine the grade-level standard(s) that will be used to develop an instructional-level academic goal.

Use the Screener Results to Develop a Goal

Gregor’s support team reviewed his Universal Screener results and identified 5.NR.5: Write, interpret, and evaluate numerical expressions within authentic problems as the grade-level standard he should work toward.

The next step is to determine which Progress Monitoring domain will best measure his growth from his current instructional level.

  1. Navigate back to the Progress Monitoring screen
  2. Click "Start" next to the student's name

  1. Use the dropdown menu to select the appropriate domain
  2. The suggested Progress Monitoring level will update automatically
  3. Click the "Writing IEP Goals? View Mathematical Process Level 04 Objectives" statement.

  1. A new window opens that displays the objectives measured on this level of Progress Monitoring in this domain. These objectives are organized into two different views:
    1. Objective-based descriptions

b. By academic standard

Monitor Progress toward the Goal

Progress monitoring automatically graphs and documents student progress for each objective, making it easy to see how effective the intervention and other learning activities are in supporting the student.

Before clicking Start, it’s important to describe the intervention in the text box at the top of the screen.

As the student completes weekly probes, Classworks makes it easy to add descriptions to the record whenever changes to the intervention plan are needed.
