Progress Monitoring Best Practices
Introduction
Classworks Progress Monitoring pairs Curriculum-Based Measurement (CBM) probes with tools to track progress and real-time reports to help you identify what is or isn't working with a student's intervention plan and make informed, instructional decisions.
Teachers
Before Starting a 12 Week Session of Probes
- Assign the probe that corresponds to the student's grade equivalency.
- Establish clear expectations and routines to support students in consistently completing their probes weekly.
- The probe should align with the student's level of intervention or SDI.
- This data is readily available from most screening tools, including the Classworks assessments.
During the 12 Week Session
- Maintain classroom routines and expectations that:
- Ensure that students take their probes each week.
- Prompt students to do their best on each weekly probe. A new probe becomes available at the start of each week, and completing it earlier in the week may allow students the opportunity to redo the probe when appropriate.
- Support students to review and interpret their data. Progress Monitoring graphs are visible on the student's landing page.
- Review data monthly to determine if intervention modifications are needed. Add Phase Change statements to document adjustments to the intervention.
After the 12 Week Session
- Review performance trends and new data to determine next steps, which could include:
- Starting a new 12-week session with the same type and level of probes
- Starting a new 12-week session with a different type ora different level of probes
- Discontinuing Progress Monitoring if the student performed at or above the 25th percentile
Site Administrators
- Guide teachers to develop routines and expectations that ensure consistent weekly probe completion
- Review progress monitoring results regularly with teachers (Tier 2) and interventionists (Tier 3) to confirm students are responding appropriately to interventions.
- Use progress monitoring data to make informed decisions about moving students between tiers as needed.
- Monitor Completion and Rate of Improvement data using the Progress Monitoring Insights Dashboard to ensure fidelity and consistency
District Administrators
- Establish a clear process for identifying students who need Tier 2 and Tier 3 support. If you use an assessment other than Classworks, ensure there is a defined process for transferring that data and identifying those students within Classworks.
- Use progress monitoring intentionally for students who are receiving interventions, rather than for all students, to ensure the data remains meaningful and actionable.
- Once a student is identified for an intervention, implement a consistent process for starting and managing their progress monitoring.
