How does Classworks support my ELL students?
Classworks is designed to support emerging bilingual students by providing equitable access to instruction while recognizing the close connection between language development and academic learning. Key supports include:
- Wittly®, the AI-powered learning assistant, which supports students within their Individualized Learning Paths by providing personalized explanations and guidance during instruction
- Text-to-speech functionality available across instructional lessons, progress monitoring, and screening to support comprehension and access
- Spanish-language academic screeners and social-emotional surveys, allowing students to demonstrate skills without language barriers
- Wittly AI-powered Mastery Measurement probes, which can present questions in a student’s first language to support accurate demonstration of understanding
Together, these features help ensure emerging bilingual students can access instruction, engage meaningfully with content, and demonstrate their learning effectively.
Step-by-Step Guidance
Wittly AI in Individualized Learning
- Wittly by ClassworksTM is available as an AI-powered learning assistant.
- Wittly is available to support students as they work on the lessons in their Individualized Learning paths.
- Wittly communicates in spoken and written Spanish as well as English, enhancing accessibility to the content for ELL and low language students.
- Students access Wittly by clicking on the Owl Icon after they have begun an activity in their learning path
- A student clicks on the 3-dots to access the preferences menu

- On the Preferences Menu, students select a style, language, and voice for Wittly by ClassworksTM

Academic Screeners
- Universal Screeners are available in both English and Spanish.
- Staff members enable the Spanish language versions by updating "Student Settings."

The English language Universal Screener generates the student's Individualized Learning path. The Spanish language screener does not generate an ILP.
SE Surveys
- Students in grades 4 - 12 self-report by completing a survey
- The students choose English or Spanish for the printed questions and audio support.
- After starting the SE survey, the student selects Spanish by clicking on "ES" in the top right corner
- Students can hear the question and answer choices by clicking on the speaker icon

Mastery Measurement
The teacher describes the probe to the AI assistant when starting a new probe. If the teacher states that the questions are to be presented in a specific language or dialect, Wittly will use that information to create the exemplar questions for the teacher's review. This ensures the student's growth is measured on the specific skill.
