What is a Mastery Measure and how do I create a new one?

Mastery Measures are teacher-developed, specific, long-term, or annual academic goals.


Teachers can choose to use a formal academic goal, like an IEP or 504 plan, as the Mastery Measure for a specific student.


Mastery Measurement Probes are designed to track progress on multiple specific, short-term objectives. Student progress toward proficiency in each aim is documented as the student completes weekly probes.

Step-by-Step Guidance

Select a Student

From the Progress Monitoring screen, click on the student’s name

Select Mastery Measurement

  • Select Mastery Measurement along the left side of the screen
  • Click "Add Measure" in the top right corner of the screen

Name the Measure

  • Give the Measure a name and add a written description. Remember, this is the name of the overall or long-term goal.
  • This can correspond to a formal academic goal. This typically lasts the entire school year. 

Note: The name of the Mastery Measure is included in the Mastery Measurement Report

Audio Support

  • Determine whether the student will have audio support via a read-aloud
  • Click Save

Now you are ready to describe the first short-term objective, the Mastery Measurement Probe that the student will complete weekly
