What are the differences in scoring Curriculum Sampling and Domain-based CBM probes?
The two types of progress monitoring are scored using different scales.
Curriculum Sampling probes are scored using the same scale used on the academic screeners
Domain-based probes are scored using percentages
Curriculum Sampling
Curriculum Sampling probes include questions from multiple areas or domains, similar to the academic screeners administered three times a year.
Using the same scale for scoring makes it easier for teachers to monitor growth in between the screener administrations.
Student Rate of Improvement
The student's actual rate of improvement is shown on the top left of the graph. This is how many scale score points (on average) the student is increasing their score by each week.
- In the sample below, the student is gaining an average of 4.16667 scale score points weekly
The target rate of improvement is shown in the top right corner of the graph. This is the average number of scale score points the student needs to increase their score by weekly to reach their goal.
- In the sample below, the target rate is 3.63636 scale score points weekly.

Graph Legend
Use the legend to read the graph. The yellow line is the student's actual performance, the green line is the target rate of improvement, the blue dots indicate the actual scores earned, and a vertical dotted line indicates a phase change has been documented.

Axis Labels
Left Axis: Score
These are the Academic Screener Scaled Score Target scores. The actual numbers on each student's graph may differ based on their performance. The scale ranges from 200 to 800.
Right Axis: Grade Level Readiness
The scaled score targets correlate with grade-level readiness. The labels here will be different for each student, based on their performance, and range from kindergarten to eighth grade.
In the sample below, the scaled scores along the left side range from 200 to 310. The grade level readiness along the right side ranges from kindergarten to second grade.

Line Graph

Baseline: The median of the student's first three probes is shown at point A on the graph above.
- In the sample, the first three scores were 240, 250, and 270. The median of the set is 250, so that is the baseline.
Target Rate of Improvement: The goal selected by the teacher is shown by point B on the graph above.
- In the sample, the teacher selected a moderate goal - this is 290.
Curriculum Sampling Rate of Improvement Goals
- Moderate - The goal is the target score for the next assessment window (Make 18 weeks of growth in 12 weeks)
- Aggressive - The goal is the target score for the second following assessment target (Make 36 weeks of growth in 12 weeks)
Domain-Based
Domain-Based probes include questions from one domain or area of focus within the content area.
Using a percentage scale makes it easier for teachers to compare instructional performance and CBM growth.
Student Rate of Improvement
The student's actual rate of improvement is shown on the top left of the graph. This is how many percentage points (on average) the student is increasing their score by each week.
- In the sample below, the student is gaining an average of 2.61667 percentage points weekly
The target rate of improvement is shown in the top right corner of the graph. This is the average number of percentage points the student needs to increase their score by weekly to reach their goal.
- In the sample below, the target rate is 2.72727 percentage score points weekly.

Graph Legend
Use the legend to read the graph. The yellow line is the student's actual performance, the green line is the target rate of improvement, the blue dots indicate the actual scores earned, and a vertical dotted line indicates a phase change has been documented.

Left Axis Label
Score: This scale ranges from 0% to 100%

Line Graph

Baseline: The median of the student's first three probes is shown at point A on the graph above.
- In the sample, the first three scores were 33%, 47%, and 40%. The median of the set is 40%, so that is the baseline.
Target Rate of Improvement: The goal selected by the teacher is shown by point B on the graph above.
- In the sample, the teacher selected a moderate goal - this is 70%.
Domain-Based Rate of Improvement Goals
- Moderate - Achieve a 70% score by the end of the 12-week session.
- Aggressive - Achieve a 80% score by the end of the 12-week session.
