How do NC Check-In assessment results support student learning?

Specific grad level math and reading instruction is correlated with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study objectives covered in each Check-In assessment. Teachers assign this instruction to prepare or review the concepts assessed on each NC assessment.

NC Check-In Mathematics

The Classworks NC Check-In Mathematics Comprehensive Support is designed in two distinct sections to support students in grades 3-8 who are preparing for the NC Check-In Interim Assessments. The main purpose of both processes is to provide students, teachers, parents, and stakeholders with relevant real-time data and an estimate of students’ current performance on the selected subset of content standards.

Classworks has customized two key elements of our online program:

  1. Rigorous Classroom Mathematics Activities to prepare students prior to each Check-In

  2. Individualized Learning Paths for each student based on their Check-In results

Individualized Learning instruction is only available when assessment results have been uploaded. To find out more about how we work with assessment partners click here.

Part One: Classroom Math

For each grade level, Classroom Mathematics have been selected that mirror the standards and sub-concepts that are assessed in the upcoming NC Check-In assessment. Each of these lessons includes three leveled problems based on the same set of information or data. Multiple choice, constructed response and digital tools are included in each lesson.

Weekly teacher-led instruction takes place using these lessons to model and support student practice of mathematical concepts and The Standards for Mathematical Practice. Teachers have real-time access to student work. As they work, students are exposed to digital tools that support modeling and reasoning abstractly or quantitatively.

Below you will find printable sheets with NC Check-In aligned Classroom Mathematics activities.

Part Two: Individualized learning for students based on their NC Check-In Results.

After taking the NC Check-In, student results are used to create Individualized Learning Path assignments. These assignments provide instruction, practice and formative assessments on the standards and key skills.

Classworks automatically assigns each student the review or progression they need based on a student’s individual results.

If students score lower than an 80% on the NC Check-In, they are automatically assigned a learning path that reviews the concepts recently tested. If they score higher than 80%, they are assigned the skills associated with the upcoming Check-In to get exposure to the next level of complexity prior to the test.

Individualized learning is automatically assigned to students upon completion of NC Check-In interim assessments. Students work on these assignments independently. Teachers monitor mastery and reassign instruction as needed.

NC Check-In Reading

The Classworks NC Check-In Reading Comprehensive Support is designed in two distinct sections to support students in grades 3-8 who are preparing for the NC Check-In Interim Assessments. The main purpose of both processes is to provide students, teachers, parents, and stakeholders with relevant, real-time data and an estimate of students’ current performance on the selected subset of content standards.

Classworks has customized two key elements of our online program:

  1. Rigorous Classroom Reading Passages to prepare students prior to each Check-In

  2. Individualized Learning Paths for each student based on their Check-In results

Individualized Learning instruction is only available when assessment results have been uploaded. To find out more about how we work with assessment partners click here.

Part One: Classroom Reading

For each grade level, Classworks Reading Passages – mirroring the balance of literary and informational texts found in the upcoming NC Check-In assessment – are available for weekly practice. Instruction using these passages models and supports student practice of active reading strategies.

Teachers should use the Classroom reading passages as part of weekly lesson plans in order to prepare students for success on each NC Check-In.

Close reading is a key requirement of the North Carolina Course of Study. Text-dependent questions provide insight into students’ proficiency with complex comprehension skills, and open-ended written responses build higher-order thinking skills.

Classworks makes it easy by organizing the resources by grade and Check-In. Teachers have the exact resources they need at their fingertips all year long. Students are gradually introduced to more complex texts prior to each Check-In.

After taking the NC Check-In, student results are used to create Individualized Learning Path assignments. These assignments provide instruction, practice and formative assessments on the standards and key skills.

If students score lower than an 80% on the NC Check-In, they receive a learning path that reviews the concepts tested on the Check-In. NC Check-In Science

The Classworks NC Check-In Science Comprehensive Support is designed to support students in grades 5 and 8 who are preparing for the NC Check-In Interim Assessments. The main purpose is to provide students, teachers, parents, and stakeholders with relevant, real-time data and an estimate of students’ current performance on the selected scientific domain and the related content standards.

Part One: Classroom Science

For the 5th and 8th grade level, Classroom Science lessons have been selected that mirror selected standards and sub-concepts from the specific scientific domain that is assessed in the upcoming NC Check-In assessment. Each of these lessons includes direct instruction, application activities and ends with a formative assessment.

Weekly teacher-led instruction takes place using these lessons to model and support student practice of scientific concepts Teachers have real-time access to student results. As they work, students are exposed to embedded videos and digital tools that support and enrich their learning.

Informational reading passages from Classworks Reading have been identified as an additional resource to the Classworks Science lessons. Teachers can use these Classroom reading passages as part of their weekly lesson plans to enrich and deepen their students’ understanding of scientific concepts that will be assessed on the NC Check-In.

Each passage already includes several text-dependent questions that provide insight into students’ proficiency with comprehension skills, and open-ended written responses that build higher-order thinking skills. In addition to these pre-built questions; teachers can incorporate targeted responses that correlate directly to their core instructional goals.

Part Two: Individualized Learning

Individualized Learning Progression assignments are only available for Mathematics and Reading. Therefore, Science NC Check-In data will not inform student individualized learning progressions.
