Classworks Early Literacy Mini-Assignments

Classworks Early Literacy Mini-Assignments

Introduction

With the added emphasis on screening our youngest learners, Classworks users now have actionable data that provides a more detailed analysis of each student’s depth of understanding of foundational literacy skills.

Performance data for 11 early literacy skills is gathered and reported when a student in kindergarten through third grade completes the Language Arts Universal Screener. This data is included in the Universal Screener Student Summary Report.

The Individualized Learning Path generated based on these results includes instructional units related to these Early Literacy Indicators. These units are organized within the Classworks Learning Progression.  For many students, this instructional level supports and encourages growth with early literacy objectives. An additional layer of support may be necessary for students who are not responding to the intervention. Custom instruction is available to provide intensive targeted instruction focused on each of the Early Literacy Indicators.

Teachers

  1. Use the Individualized Learning dashboard to monitor students’ running averages. Remember that data has been used to place each unit on a student’s ILP. Since these units are at each student’s instructional or readiness level, it is reasonable for students to earn an 80% or greater average.
  1. Use the Student Detail Screen “Individualized Learning” tab to monitor specific students' performance. Remember to use the domain filters to zero in on Word Analysis and Reading skill units. If you notice that a student struggles to earn an 80% unit score follow your existing processes to conference with the learner and reassign the unit.
  1. If the student continues to struggle with skill units related to one of the Early Literacy Indicators, assign the appropriate Early Literacy Mini-Assignment to provide targeted intensive support. Additional units will be automatically added to the student’s ILP based on their performance on the activities within the mini-assignment

Site Administrators

  1. Set teacher expectations for monitoring Individualized Learning so that teachers are intentionally reviewing results to assign the mini-assignments in a timely manner.
  2. Include discussion and review of Classworks data in grade-level planning meetings and set expectations for assigning these mini-assignments and/or modifying the units on a student’s ILP.
  3. Use the Individualized Learning Insights to monitor grade-level and school-wide progress with Individualized Learning.
  4. Apply existing school-wide initiatives and incentives to recognize student progress.

District Administrators

  1. Ensure you have clear expectations for the implementation of Classworks Individualized Learning.
  2. Use Individualized Learning Insights to monitor progress across schools.
  3. Apply existing recognition systems to recognize school leaders and teachers whose students demonstrate measurable progress.
