The Summative Benchmark assessment is used to track grade-level mastery and growth throughout the year and to assess outcomes at the end of the year. It is typically administered at the beginning of the year as a pre-test, during the year as an interim test and at the end of the year as a post-test.
The Benchmark Assessment addresses grades K-8 (Language Arts and Math) as well as Geometry I, Algebra I and English I. The test contains 20-35 items and does bookmark.
Questions are not randomized to allow the teacher to read the assessment aloud as needed. As a formal assessment, proper test administration measures must be taken.
Formative Recommendations Report
After students have taken the Summative Benchmark, the Formative Recommendations report will be available. The Formative Recommendations report is used to view student results from a specific administration of the Summative Benchmark. From its results, you can identify student progress on grade-level skills; it can help you identify students needing remediation. Results are based on common vertical scaled scores.
Generate the Summative Benchmark: Formative Recommendations Report
1. Navigate to the Individualized Learning tab and select your filter criteria to find the student(s) you'd like to run a report for.
2. Place a check next to the student(s) that you would like to generate the report for, OR check the box at the top of this list to select all students. Then click Generate Report.
3. For Report Type, select Assessment, then choose Summative Benchmark and choose Benchmark Results: Formative Recommendations. Click Next.
4. Name your Report and select your report characteristics.
5. Choose what you would like to do with the report:
- Save: Saves the report to be available under My Reports on the Reports tab. This allows you to run it again using the same settings.
- Export to File: Allows you to generate a CSV file or Tab Delimited file that will be emailed to the user.
- Preview: Allows you to preview the report and print it as a PDF, if desired.

What to Look For
As you read the report, notice the following items:
- What is the average proficiency of the group (data displayed above the blue target proficiency bar)?
- What is the student's CBM level? Is it on, above, or below their actual grade level?
- How does the average score compare to the target proficiency based on time of year – fall, winter, spring? This can be used when needing to compare a student to his/her peers.
- (If displaying by class, teacher or school) Is there a key strand that is an overall weakness for the group? Is there a key strand that is an overall strength for the group? Use this information to help with classroom planning.
- If displaying by class, view the average scaled score for each Key Strand.
- When viewing individual student results, be sure to notice the amount of time the student spent taking the assessment. Is it an adequate amount of time?
- The overall score and overall proficiency reflect data for all strands assessed. The individual strand information is displayed for only key strands, which are strands where we have asked enough questions to be able to identify it as a student strength or weakness.
Export to File Options
You can export the results of a Summative Benchmark test administration to a data file. The data file can be opened in a spreadsheet in order to manipulate the data as needed. For example, you may wish to sort the data to find your bottom 25% or top 25% of students.
You can export the Summative benchmark data into a .csv (i.e. spreadsheet) file.
The file contains the following Summative Benchmark data:
- Test name
- Student District ID
- Student name
- Correct/Attempted for each strand assessed
- Student's scaled score
- Proficiency score (based on corresponding testing window)
- Testing Window in which test was administered
- Date student completed the assessment
- Duration (in seconds)
- Teacher name
- School name
Note: The Display By options do not apply to export.
After students have taken the Summative Benchmark, Individualized Learning Paths (ILPs) can be generated based on the assessment results.
